U21 Championship
The Bornacoola U21 team put in a battling performance in difficult conditions against Drumkeerin in the quarter final of the 13-a-side championship in Drumreilly on Saturday last and were rewarded for their efforts with a nail biting one point victory and a place in the semi-finals. The key score of the game was a goal just before the interval when midfielder Damian Moran followed up on his own shot to find the net and give the Bors a two point lead at half time. Despite a succession of injuries and the difficult weather conditions, the lads held on throughout the second half to record a memorable 1-5 to 0-7 victory.
The team on duty was: Damian Mc Gowan, Conor Mc Cauley, Mervyn Howard, Darren Mc Gushin, Paul Hackett, David Mulligan, Feargal Howard (0-3), Damian Moran (1-0), Harry Comiskey, Oliver Vaughan, Alan Croghan (0-1), Sean Mc Keon (0-1) and Declan Shanley.

Bornacoola suffered defeat in their final league game of the season to St Marys in Dromod on Sunday last. The result means the Bors will now play in Division 2 next year for the first time since 1997. Despite a bright opening in which Declan Shanley found the back of the net for Bornacoola, the Bors again let a five point half time lead dissipate and St Marys finished the stronger to record a 2-9 to 1-10 victory. The team on duty was: Feargal Mc Gill, Damian Mc Guinness, Morgan Shanley, Jason Conroy, John Mc Guinness, Conor Mc Cauley, Niall O Connor, Michael Duignan, Colm Farrell (0-2), Jonathan Duffy, David O Connor, Declan Shanley (1-2), Mark Mc Closkey (0-4), Brian Conroy (0-2) and Philip Howard.

Junior C Championship
The third team exited the championship on Sunday last as a physically more imposing Leitrim Gaels proved a bridge too far in the semi-final of the competition, played in Annaduff. The Gaels played with the aid of a decent breeze in the first half and despite a well taken goal midway through, the Bors were very much in contention at half time, just five points in arrears. However, Bornacoola never got going up front in the second half and Leitrim Gaels were worthy 2-11 to 0-7 winners at the full time whistle.
The team on duty was: Dara Gavigan, Tony Bohan, John “Barnes” Shanley, Sean Ryan, Dermot Shanley, Christy Bohan, Kevin Canning, Peter Mallon, Richard Bohan, Biran Mallon, Gerry Gearty, Kevin Mallon, Seoirse Reynolds, Declan Conboy and Alan Bohan. Subs introduced were Jackie Conboy, Damian Mc Gowan and Harry Comiskey.

Shield Play-Off
The Senior team played a heavily understrength Sean O Heslins in the Shield play-off in Cloone on Sunday morning last. Two first half goals from Colm Farrell and Philip Howard left Bornacoola eleven points ahead at the interval and laid the foundations for what was ultimately a comfortable victory on a 2-13 to 1-7 scoreline.
The team on duty was Feargal Mc Gill, Seamus Mallon, Morgan Shanley (0-1), Damian Mc Guinness, John Mc Guinness (0-1), Conor Mc Cauley (0-2), Niall Mc Gowan, Colm Farrell (1-1), Niall O Connor, Declan Shanley (0-2), Sean Mc Keon (0-1), Jonathan Duffy, Trevor Howard, Michael Duignan and Philip Howard (1-4). Subs used Feargal Howard, Jason Conroy, Brian Conroy, Mervyn Howard and Bobby Shanley. The next game in this competition is now effectively a semi-final clash between ourselves and Dromahaire on Sunday week with the winners proceeding to the Shield Final against Carrigallen on October 31st.

Masonite Senior Championship
Unfortunately County champions Glencar/Manorhamilton proved too strong for Bornacoola in the replay of the County semi-final on Saturday evening last. Despite a strong opening half hour, the Bors found themselves a point down at half time as the North Leitrim men scored a goal with the last action of the half. A Sean Mc Keon goal offered hope midway through the second half but despite a valiant effort, it was Manorhamilton who finished the stronger and held on for a 1-10 to 1-7 victory. Bornacoola team and scorers: Feargal Mc Gill, Damian Mc Guinness, Morgan Shanley, Jason Conroy, John Mc Guinness, Conor Mc Cauley (0-2), Niall O Connor, Michael Duignan (0-1), Colm Farrell, Sean Mc Keon (1-0), David O Connor (0-1), Mark Mc Closkey (0-3), Brian Conroy, Damian Moran, Philip Howard. Junior C Championship
The Junior C team got their championship campaign underway with an excellent 0-13 to 1-9 victory over Eslin in Annaduff on Sunday last. Masonite Senior Championship
Bornacoola and Glencar/Manorhamilton played out a thrilling draw in the semi-final of the Masonite Senior Championship in Páirc Seán on Sunday last. Bornacoola were the better team in the first half and five unanswered points before half time left the County Champions trailing by 0-8 to 0-3 at half time.
However, Manor were reinvigorated after half time and a well taken goal midway through the second half set the game up for a tense finale. While both sides had chances to win the game, neither were able to make the decisive breakthrough and the teams had to settle for a 1-6 to 0-9 draw. The replay takes place this Saturday in Carrick at 5.30pm.

Masonite Senior Championship

Bornacoola 1-10 Mohill 0-11

Bornacoola qualified for their fifth consecutive Masonite Senior Championship semi-final with a two point victory over neighbours Mohill in Ballinamore on Sunday evening last.

The Bors started brightly and established a 0-4 to 0-1 lead early on. However, Mohill were very strong in the second quarter and had deservingly levelled the game at 0-5 apiece by half time. They also started the second half in control and it took a goal from Colm Farrell to keep Bornacoola in contention.

However, as the second half wore on, the Bors began to find their feet and some well taken scores earned a hard fought victory on a scoreline of 1-10 to 0-11. Team and scorers: Feargal Mc Gill, Damian Mc Guinness, Conor Mc Cauley, Jason Conroy, John Mc Guinness, Morgan Shanley, Niall O Connor, Michael Duignan (0-2), Colm Farrell (1-1), Damian Moran (0-1), David O Connor (0-1), Trevor Howard, Philip Howard (0-2), Mark Mc Closkey (0-2), Brian Conroy. Subs used: Sean Mc Keon, Jonathan Duffy.

A word of congratulations to Cumman Seán Uí hEislin on their exceptional new facilities. The pitch was in fantastic condition despite the monsoons which fell at the weekend and the new stand and dressing room facilities are of an exceptional quality and something all of Ballinamore and Leitrim should be proud of. U-14 Title
Pride of place this week to our wonderful U-14 team who captured the 9-a-side title on Friday evening last when they overcame a gallant Glenfarne team in an entertaining and sporting final in Leitrim village. It has been an excellent year for the boys at this level and they worked tremendously hard throughout the championship to maintain their unbeaten record. They have also been very sporting throughout and this is every bit as important as winning titles.
Congratulations to team manager Seamus Mallon and to the entire panel of Shane Sullivan, Brian Duffy, Liam Mulligan, Robert O'Beirne, Ciaran Campbell, Sean Muldowney, Ronan Mulligan, Kevin Shanley, Dillon Hackett, Fergal Hackett, Gearoid Mulligan, Kevin Mulligan, Liam Jones and Karl Mallon.

However Carrigallen rattled off 1-3 without reply to take a three point lead into the break. Masonite Senior League
We travelled to Manorhamilton on Sunday last for our penultimate game in Division 1 of the Masonite Senior League. A poor first half performance from Bornacoola left the home side 1-8 to 0-3 ahead at the break. A second half goal from Colm Farrell gave the Bors a glimmer of hope as the margin was closed to four points at one stage, but Glencar/Manor closed out the game for a comfortable 1-13 to 1-6 victory. Team was: Feargal Mc Gill, Damian Mc Guinness, Seamus Mallon, Jason Conroy, John Mc Guinness, Conor Mc Cauley, Niall Mc Gowan, Michael Duignan (0-2), Colm Farrell (1-0), Trevor Howard, David O Connor, Feargal Howard, Brian Conroy, Mark Mc Closkey (0-4) and Declan Shanley. The U-14’s had no game this week but will face Aughnasheelin on Friday night next in Aughnasheelin at 7pm when they will be hoping to build on the three straight victories already earned in their group.

Division 4
The 3rd team travelled to Manorhamilton needing at least a draw to have a chance of staying in the division. Playing with a lot of pride, they battled hard throughout and managed to earn a 0-11 to 0-11 draw. It remains to be seen whether this will be enough to avoid relegation, but at least the lads have given themselves a fighting chance and indeed played some very good football in their first year in Division 4. Well done to all involved and a special word of thanks to the management team of Michael Mallon and Seoirse Reynolds for their efforts throughout the year.

Minor Championship
The Minors are in action in Cornageeha this Wednesday (July 22nd) when they play Gortletteragh at 7pm.

U-12 Blitz
The U-12 blitz continues on Monday night next, July 27th when Annaduff travel to Dromod to take on the young Bors. The action gets underway at 7pm; if you haven’t been to one of the blitz evenings yet, it is well worth your while to go along and see the excellent work that is being carried out with underage players in Leitrim. There is some great football to enjoy and a real sporting atmosphere prevails. .

News - 14 - 07 - 09

Senior League
A well taken first half goal from Brian Conroy was the key score in earning the senior team a draw in an entertaining Masonite League Division 1 clash in Dromod on Sunday last. Bornacoola had some late chances to claim both points on offer but on balance a draw on a scoreline of 1-8 to 0-11 was a fair result.
Team on duty Bobby Shanley, Jason Conroy, Seamus Mallon, Damian Mc Guinness, John Mc Guinness, Conor Mc Cauley, Niall Mc Gowan, Michael Duignan (0-2), David O Connor, Mervyn Howard, Trevor Howard (0-1), Jonathan Duffy (0-1), Brian Conroy (1-0), Mark Mc Closkey (0-4) and Declan Shanley. This Sunday, Glencar/Manorhamilton are the opposition in the Bee Park at 2.30pm. In what is our last game of the season, a win is vital if the boys are to have any chance of avoiding relegation.

U-12 News
Well done to the U-12’s who were in action against Mohill last week. This weekend they travel to Drumkeerin on Saturday for a 12noon throw in with the bus leaving the park at 11am. On Monday July 20th, Aughnasheelin visit the park at 7pm for the latest round of the blitz.

Ladies Underage News

The panel on duty recently included: Tanya Donnelly, Clara Reid, Claire Rogers, Sarah Mc Weeney, Dawn Hackett, Lauren Shanley, Roisin Donnelly, Niamh Donnelly, Shauna Diffley, Michelle Hackett, Seona Cosgrove, Hannah Mc Glynn, Cora Feeron, Tanya Boyle. Well done to Leitrim under 14s who won the all Ireland Shield B final replay in Ballymahon at the weekend, defeating Offaly on a scoreline of 3-10 to 2-2 and in particular to our own Nadine Hackett who was a member of the panel.

Best Wishes
Our best wishes to Ladies stalwart Niamh Reynolds (Esker) and fiancée Enda Delaney who are getting married this weekend. Niamh, daughter of George and Evelyn, is a primary school teacher and has been a terrific worker for the club for many years. She can currently be seen starring on the Bornacoola ladies team at the weekends. Meanwhile fiancée Enda is a devoted Laois football fan and while he also enjoys watching a bit of rugby, one suspects he gets little conversation out of brothers-in-law to be Shane and Seoirse on that particular subject!! Our best wishes to you both for long life and happiness together.

News 23 - 6 - 09

Senior Shield
The Senior team finally got their Shield campaign underway on Friday night last when they travelled to Ballinamore to play Sean O Heslins. A confident performance delivered two points for the Bors as they recorded a 2-14 to 0-10 victory. This Friday night Eslin are the visitors to Dromod in the Shield and the game will throw in at 8.15pm.

Division 3
The Junior A team hosted Allen Gaels on Saturday evening last. Short a number of regulars, a ten minute spell in the first half when the Drumshanbo men recorded 1-3 without reply, proved to be the Bors undoing. Despite a number of good goal chances in both halves, Bornacoola were unable to find the net. Final Score Allen Gaels 1-9 Bornacoola 0-10

Girls School Team
Hard luck to our national schools girls team who lost the seven a side schools final on Thursday last. Despite a big effort from our girls Cloone were much the stronger side and ran out deserving winners on the day. However it was a great achievement for the Bornacoola girls to reach the final and there will no doubt be better days ahead.
The Panel involved included: Dawn Hackett, Tanya Donnelly, Clara Reid, Orla Mc Weeney, Jolene Francis, Shannon Boyle, Sarah Mc Weeney, Colleen Bohan, Claire Rogers, Celine Bolger, Lauren Shanley, Shauna Diffley, Roisin Donnelly and Niamh Donnelly.

U-12 Girls
Our Under 12 Girls got their 9 a side championship started on Saturday last against Dromahaire. In what was a very close and entertaining game the girls put in a great performance to win by two points. A number of new faces also made their first appearance and we’d like to thank Dromahaire for a most sporting game and also Mary Shanley for refereeing at short notice. The girls are next in action on Thursday evening away to Aughlin Gaels.

U-10 Boys
Our under 10 squad traveled to Gortletteragh on Wednesday evening last to play a challenge match. Once again we had some great performances all over the field with a number of players making their debuts in the black and amber. Our thanks to the Gortletteragh club for a great game.
The team was Shane Mallon, Cian Mallon, Holly Costello, Christy Sullivan, Tanya Boyle, Ciaran Mc Glynn, Hannah Mc Glynn, Jordan Cramp, Oran Mc Guinness, Christopher Healy, Cora Feeron, Brendan Feeron, Michelle Hackett, Arran Hackett, Sean Mc Goldrick, Enda Mc Goldrick and Jake Sheils.

Division 4
The long journey to Dromahaire on Sunday morning proved a fruitless one for our Junior B team as they suffered a heavy defeat to a very sharp home team. With only three games remaining, the Bors will require at least another two points to ensure survival in this Division. This Sunday, Kiltubrid visit Dromod for a 2pm throw-in.

Congratulations
Love was very much in the air in Bornacoola this week as Club Secretary Shane Reynolds and Ladies stalwart Orla Bohan announced their engagement. Shane of course had a very successful playing career with the Bors over a long number of years and captured both junior championship and league medals in the Black and Amber. After many years of the club playing in the Junior and Intermediate championships in Leitrim, I know it was a particular highlight for Shane to see the club promoted to Senior level and he was one of the stars of the Bornacoola team in 1999 that reached the County semi-final, when he lined out at wing back. Although he has never officially retired (the third team championship is only around the corner!) these days Shane’s main concentration is as Secretary of the Club. He took over this role in 2005 (from his soon to be brother-in-law Declan) and has been a most efficient and popular custodian of the post in the intervening period. Over the years Shane has been involved in absolutely every aspect of club life, even taking to the stage in Scór on occasion, and is the quintessential club man.

Like Shane, Orla played for many years for Bornacoola and I know her highlight in the Black and Amber jersey came late in the Ladies Junior final in 2004, when she came off the bench towards the end of Bornacoola’s victory over St Mary’s to earn a Junior championship medal with the club. Also like Shane, no one is quite sure if she has actually retired or not from the playing fields and one suspects she’d be available to tog out again if ever called upon by the Ladies. A keen Scor devotee, Orla is also an accomplished administrator and served on the club Executive for many years. Perhaps that’s where the romance really blossomed!! In any case, your many, many friends in the club have asked me to pass on their best wishes and congratulations to you both and we hope you have many years of happiness together.

Club Draw
The monthly club draw takes place this Saturday night in the Copper Still. Music on the night and your support as always would be greatly appreciated.

U-12 Blitz

Schools Final
Pride of place this week must go to the Scoil Mhuire NS Boys team who retained their Division 3 Shield Title after a pulsating final with St. Hugh’s NS, Dowra, played at St Mary’s Park Ck-on-Shannon on Saturday last on a final scoreline of 6-07 to 3-15. A last minute Ronan Mulligan goal secured the title in a game that had everything. Leading 2-06 to 1-04 at the break, the boys fell five points behind following a rip-roaring start to the second half by their opponents. Displaying tremendous spirit, they kept to their task and were rewarded for their efforts by securing the title in injury time amid great excitement.
Team: Liam Jones, Gearoid Mulligan, Brian Duffy, Fergal Hackett, Ronan Mulligan (2-2) Sean Muldowney, Joshua Francis, Robert O Beirne (1-2), Karl Mallon (0-1). Subs: Dylan Hackett (3-0), Luke Jones, Patryk Kozac, Brendan Fearon, Kevin Mulligan, Jack Keville, Dylan Rogan.

Senior League
The Senior team turned in a hard working performance to earn a valuable two points as they secured victory over Allen Gaels in Dromod on Sunday. Despite the visitors gaoling intheir first attack of the game through Sean Mc Gourty, two goals for the Bors, both from the boot of Damian Moran, left Bornacoola 2-5 to 1-4 ahead at the interval. The game was nip and tuck throughout the second half, but Bornacoola’s ability to respond each time the Gaels registered scores was vital in ensuring a 2-12 to 1-10 victory.
Team and scorers: Feargal Mc Gill, Seamus Mallon, Conor Mc Cauley, Jason Conroy, Mervyn Howard, Morgan Shanley, Niall O Connor, Michael Duignan (0-1), David O Connor (0-2), Declan Shanley, Sean Mc Keon (0-2), Philip Howard, Brian Conroy (0-2), Damian Moran (2-1), Mark Mc Closkey (0-2). The team at the weekend was MMichelle Reilly, Sarah Duffy, Rachel Duignan, Niamh Reynolds, Jillian Duignan 0-1, Charlotte Faughnan 1-2, Fiona Reilly 2-3, Leonie Duffy 0-2 Kelly Howard 2-2, Subs used: Cora Mc Cauley, Shannon Boyle, Allison Mc Keon, Jessica Mc Keon, Michelle O Beirne 1-1, Lisa Geelan 2-0, Coleen Bohan, Susan Shanley

Division 4
The Junior B team were most unfortunate not to take a victory from their meeting with Allen Gaels last Sunday but in the end up had to be happy to settle for a draw on a scoreline of 2-5 to 1-8.
The Bornacoola team was Kevin Mallon, Sean Ryan, Brian Reilly, Brendan Duignan, John Shanley, Bobby Shanley, John Mc Govern, John Bohan, Damian Moran, Ollie Vaughan, Aidan Reilly, Mervyn Howard, Alan Croghan, Damian Mc Gowan and David Mulligan. With three games remaining, the lads are hovering just above the relegation zone, so a few more points in the coming weeks will be vital.

Division 4
The Division 4 team’s early season heroics have been somewhat dented by a number of injuries to key players and form over the past couple of weeks has not been as impressive as in the early rounds of the league. Last Sunday, they made the journey to Ballinaglera but never really got out of the blocks as the home side were impressive in recording a 1-14 to 0-7 victory. Next weekend, the boys will hope to get the train back on the tracks as they travel to Leitrim Gaels on Sunday morning for an 11am throw in.

Club Draw
The Club Draw takes place on Saturday night next in the Copper Still. Music will be by Ronnie Duignan and as it is a Bank Holiday weekend and comes only hours before the Leitrim/Roscommon game, a big crowd and a great night’s entertainment is guaranteed.

Meanwhile, our girls school team have played four of their five games and have won three and lost just one. With just one game left they are in with a great shout of appearing in the final. The under 14 girls have played two matches and despite two good performances they came out on the losing side.

Senior League
We made the long trip to Melvin Gaels on Saturday night last. Minus a number of regulars, an early injury which forced the withdrawal of Michael Duignan left the Bors with an uphill struggle. Trailing by 9 points at half time, Bornacoola made a brave attempt to get back into the game but despite creating a number of goal chances, were unable to raise the green flag that might have turned the game in their favour. Two goals for the Gaels in the closing minutes ensured what was ultimately a deserved victory for the Kinlough club. Our thanks to Melvin Gaels for their hospitality after the game.
Team on duty was: Gerry Gearty, Damian Mc Guinness, Conor Mc Cauley (0-2), Jason Conroy, John Mc Guinness (0-1), Morgan Shanley, Mervyn Howard, Michael Duignan, Colm Farrell, Trevor Howard (0-1), Feargal Howard, Declan Shanley (0-1), Ollie Vaughan, Brian Conroy (0-2) and Sean Mc Keon. Subs used: Jonathan Duffy and Aidan Reilly. This Saturday evening we play Gortletteragh in Dromod in at 6.30pm

Division 3
The Junior A team were in action in Dromod on Sunday morning last when they met a very strong Ballinaglera outfit. Enjoying an exceptional first half, the Bors went to the dressing room two points to the good. However, with nine of the team having played in Kinlough in very warm conditions the previous evening, the Bors visibly tired in the second half as Glera began to find their accuracy and a string of well taken scores ensured a comfortable 0-14 to 0-6 victory for the visitors.
Bornacoola team was: Feargal Mc Gill, Sean Ryan, Seamus Mallon, Brendan Duignan, Damian Mc Guinness, Shane Conroy, Mervyn Howard, Feargal Howard, Damian Moran, Jonathan Duffy, Declan Shanley, Aidan Reilly, Ollie Vaughan, Brian Conroy and Brian Reilly. Subs used: John Bohan, Alan Croghan.

U-14 Boys
The U-14 team suffered defeat against Gortletteragh last week. However, it was a most encouraging performance and the very positive onfield attitude of the players was most notable. The panel on duty included Shane Sullivan Ciaran Campbell, Dillon Hackett, Fergal Hackett, Robert O’Beirne, Kevin Shanley, Liam Mulligan, Karl Mallon, Gearoid Mulligan, Ronan Mulligan, Brian Duffy, Liam Jones, Patrick Kozack, Kevin Mulligan

Fundraising Draw
I’m told that tickets for the Club’s upcoming fundraising draw are beginning to sell like hot cakes. They are available from all members of the club and of course the finance generated will ensure the upkeep of our facilities in Dromod for the benefit of all in the parish. Priced at €20 each, there are a range of excellent prizes on offer including: 1st €3000, 2nd €1500 voucher sponsored by Sean and Deidre Farrell “Flair”, 3rd Two All Ireland Football tickets, 4th Two All Ireland Hurling tickets, 5th Dinner for 4 in Flynn’s Shannon Key West hotel, 6th Dinner for four in the Copper still, Dromod plus five more prizes of €100 each. We would ask every club member to put in a special effort to make this venture a success.

Ladies News
The Ladies were due to play Ballinamore last weekend, but that game was cancelled. On Bank Holiday Monday they played a very mobile Dromahaire team in Dromod and it was the North Leitrim girls who emerged victorious. The girls will more than likely be in action this weekend – check fixtures sections of the local papers for information.

All Ireland Success

We were delighted to be the first to extend a congratulatory Céad Míle Fáilte to the Sean O Heslins Novelty Act that won the Scór All Ireland title in Killarney at the weekend. The victorious troupe were welcomed at Cloonturk by a large contingent of Bors and well wishers from across Leitrim. Comhghairdeas ó chroí ó gach duine i mBarr na Cúille.

Division 4

Our third team play Dromahaire in Division 4 this weekend. Please check with management for time and venue details.

Senior League
An understrength Bornaccola enjoyed an excellent three point victory over Aughawillan on Saturday last in Division 1 of the Masonite Senior league. The Bors lead through most of the game, but a late surge from Aughawillan almost yielded a draw for the visitors as a last minute penalty came back off the post as the Bors held on for a 0-9 to 0-6 victory.
Team: Feargal Mc Gill, Jason Conroy, Conor Mc Cauley, Damian Mc Guinness, Mervyn Howard, Morgan Shanley, John Mc Guinness (0-1), Michael Duignan, Paul Hackett (0-1), Trevor Howard, Ollie Vaughan (0-1), Jonathan Duffy, Sean Mc Keon (0-1), Brian Conroy (0-2), Mark Mc Closkey (0-3). Subs used: Damian Moran, Seamus Mallon, Declan Shanley

U-14 League
The U-14’s played Kiltubrid on Friday evening, and produced a terrific second half display. Unfortunately their territorial dominance in that period wasn’t reflected on the scoreboard and a wonderful display from the Kiltubrid keeper ensured they held out for a 4-5 to 0-8 win in a most entertaining game.
Bornacoola players on duty were: Shane Sullivan Ciaran Campbell, Dillon Hackett, Fergal Hackett, Robert O’Beirne, Kevin Shanley, Liam Mulligan, Karl Mallon, Gearoid Mulligan, Ronan Mulligan, Brian Duffy, Liam Jones, Patrick Kozack, Kevin Mulligan

40 Years of Scór
Well done to all involved with Scór Liatroma for their exceptional organisation of a concert to celebrate 40 years of Scór Liatroma in Ballinamore on Saturday last. Bornacoola were well represented with former All Ireland Recitation winner Aidan Dockery performing superbly on the night and the Connacht title winning Ballad Group from 1983 (featuring Tom Moran, Sean Mc Gowan, Anne Keenan, Philomena Mulligan and Feargal Mc Gill – representing the late Cormac) also on stage. However, it was the successful Set Dancers from the mid-80’s who really brought the house down with Patricia Mc Goldrick, Anne Keenan, Philomena Mulligan, Martina Hackett (in place of the unavailable Teresa Duignan), Micheal Mc Gowan, Sean Beirne, Seoirse Reynolds (in place of an injured Tommy Larkin) and Gerard Mulligan turning back the years to provide a fabulous performance. Comhghairdeas daoibh go léir is do gach duine a bhfuil baint acu le Scór Liatroma i mbliana is tríd dhá scór mbliana den chomórtais.

Club Draw
The Club Draw was held in the Shannon Key West Hotel on Saturday night last. Winners were: Eur100 Mae Mc Gushin Eur20 Joesephine Mc Gushin, Pauline Hanley, John Duffy Pat Farrell (Dromod) and Benny Kenny.

Division 3
The Division 3 team played their third game of the competition on Sunday last when they took on Drumkeerin in the Park. A goal from early substitute Alan Croghan helped the Bors to a commanding half time lead of eight points. However, the introduction of Francis Davitt saw a re-energised Drumkeerin in the second half and a terrific comeback from the visitors saw them come up just short as the Bors held on for a 1-12 to 0-11 victory.
Team: Gerry Gearty, John Reynolds, Seamus Mallon, Sean Ryan, Damian Mc Guinness, Brendan Duignan, Mervyn Howard, Feargal Howard, Paul Hackett, Jonathan Duffy, Shane Conroy, Damian Moran, Declan Shanley, Brian Conroy and Ollie Vaughan . Sub used: Alan Croghan

Rehab People of the Year
Our congratulations to Rosari Gearty and Geraldine Moran on their nomination for the Rehab Leitrim People of the Year awards. The awards will be presented at a Banquet in the Bush Hotel on Saturday night, April 25th.

Senior Team Matters
The Senior team have been drawn with Carrigallen and Aughnasheelin in the 2009 Masonite Senior Championship. On Sunday afternoon last, the lads played Oldcastle and enjoyed an encouraging victory. Our thanks to the Meath side for providing an excellent work out. Next Saturday evening the lads are at home to Aughawillan in a Division 1 league meeting that will have a 6pm throw-in.

Club Draw
This month’s club draw takes place next Saturday night in the Shannon Key West. Music and house draw on the night.

Underage Training
Training for our underage players continues every Saturday morning at 11am. The numbers attending have been outstanding so far.

Scór
Our Question Time team were denied what would have been a historic fourth Connacht Title in a row when they were pipped by just 2 marks in last Sunday’s Connacht final in Elphin by Roscommon champions Clan na nGael. Well done once again to our team of Aidan Dockery, Louise Staunton and Liam Rabbitte and no doubt they’ll be back next year in search of another title. It was however a good night for Leitrim as the Sean O Heslins novelty act and the figure dancers from Glencar/Manorhamilton advanced to the All Ireland finals. In addition, the Cormac Mc Gill memorial trophy was presented for the first time to Leitrim as the overall County winners in Connacht. The trophy was presented by Connacht Council and named after our late club man Cormac.
Meanwhile, this Friday night, a concert celebrating 40 years of Scor Liatroma will take place in Ballinamore Community Centre at 8.30pm. The concert will see many of the great Scór acts of the past taking part including the Bornacoola Ballad group from 1983 (which will include Sean Mc Gowan, Tom Moran, Philomena Mulligan, Anne Keenan – nee Mulligan and Feargal Mc Gill in place of his father Cormac) and the Set Dancers of the mid 80’s that dominated Connacht for many years. I understand the Set Dance team on Friday night will feature Anne and Philomena, Patricia Mc Goldrick (nee Reilly), Martina Hackett (in place of Teresa Duignan who unfortunately is unavailable on the night), Tommy Larkin, Sean Beirne, Gerard Mulligan, Micheal Mc Gowan. It should be a night not to be missed.

Junior A
The Junior A team travel to Drumkeerin on Sunday next for a Division 3 league game which gets underway at 2.30pm. In the Masonite Junior A championship, the boys have been drawn in a group alongside Melvin Gaels and St Marys.

Division 4
A highly entertaining game in the park last Saturday evening as the Bors 3rd team took on Sean O Heslins 2nd team. Two first half goals for the Ballinamore team seemed to have set them on the road to victory but a well taken penalty from Damian Moran just before half time left the Bors a chink of light. O Heslins again opened a sizable lead in the 2nd period, but the Bors refused to give up and two John Bohan goals brought the sides level as the clock ticked down. However a strong finish from the visitors ensured a victory for them on a scoreline of 2-12 to 3-7.
Team: Dara Gavigan, Sean Ryan, Christy Bohan, John Shanley, David Mulligan, Paul Hackett, Brendan Duignan, Mervyn Howard, Bobby Shanley, Ollie Vaughan, John Bohan, Aidan Reilly, Damian Moran, Brian Reilly and Kevin Mallon.

Ladies League
The Ladies team face a long journey to Dromahaire on Sunday morning next for a game that will throw-in at 12 noon.

Our best wishes to our newest clubman – John Mc Govern – on his engagement at the weekend to Patrice Doyle. Comhghairdeas daoibh beirt.

U-16 League
The U-16’s enjoyed an excellent victory away to Aughnasheelin on Saturday morning last when some well taken goals were crucial in securing a 5-10 to 3-3 victory. The team and scorers in full was Shane Sullivan, Barry Reid, Daniel Farrell (0-1), Conor Mc Weeney, Kieran Campbell, Roy Keenan (0-1), Mark Muldowney (0-1), Tony Shanley (1-0), Kevin Shanley (2-5), Conor Hackett (1-0), Anthony Mulligan (1-2). U-14 League
The U-14 team travel to Kiltubrid on Friday evening next where the meet the home side in a game that will have a 7pm throw-in.

Birthday Wishes
The March and April period is a great time of year for birthdays and lots of celebrations in this respect within the club in recent weeks. A little birdie was in touch to tell me that Mary Mc Cauley has clocked up the half century this week – I had to get in touch with Sean to make sure this was accurate, but he assures me the tacograph is reading 50 right enough. Another Mary would no doubt be very disappointed if I forgot to give her the annual mention – that’s our own Mrs Reynolds in Cloncolory who will add another year on Friday next. Happy Birthday to you both and I hope the respective hubbies dug deep in the pockets to deliver the presents of your dreams!! Finally, if my records aren’t failing me, I think around mid April there might be a few candles lighting on a cake up in Esker where Rose will again be practicing her singing of Happy Birthday as Hubert adds another year and indeed our Player of the Year Colm will need a cake this week too! Busy times on the Birthday front.

Scor
The County Finals of Scor Sinsear took place in Ballinamore on Saturday night last. Bornacoola were represented in Figure Dancing, Set Dancing, Recitation and Question Time. While all of our participants performed exceptionally well, it was the Question Time team of Aidan Dockery, Liam Rabbitte and Louise Staunton who were our sole winners on the night. A special word of thanks to Mary Cassidy and John Geary for providing the music for our set dancers, not just on the night but over the past couple of weeks and indeed the last number of years. Also to Kathleen Moffatt and Tracey O Neill for the huge effort they put in to preparing our dancers and to Fox’s of Tooman and the Shannon Key in Rooskey for use of their premises for rehearsals. Finally a word of praise to our Scor co-ordinator Martina Hackett who pulled out all the stops to ensure an excellent Bornacoola entry for the 40th anniversary of Scór Liatroma. The Connacht Finals are in Elphin on Sunday evening next. Best of luck to our Question Time team and indeed to all of the Leitrim participants.
Finally, on matters Scór, there will be a centenary concert featuring memorable acts from Scór over the years in Ballinamore on Friday 3rd April and the 1983 Bornacoola Ballad Group and the Set dancers (who won five Connaught titles in a row) will be taking part on the night. Should be a good concert so come along and a great night is guaranteed. .

Junior A – Division 3
Our Junior A team had their second game of the season and recorded an excellent 2-13 to 1-8 victory over Glencar Manorhamilton in the park on Sunday morning last. A hard working first half left the Bors 0-7 to 0-4 ahead at the break but when Manor goaled in the opening minute of the second half it looked like the Bors had it all to do as they were playing into the teeth of a strong wind. However a superb goal from Ollie Vaughan steadied the Bors and when Bobby Shanley added a second about 8 minutes from the end, it was clear the points were staying in Dromod.
Bor team was Feargal Mc Gill, Sean Ryan, Seamus Mallon, John Reynolds, Mervyn Howard (0-1), Paul Hackett, Damian Mc Guinness (0-2), Feargal Howard (0-2), Bobby Shanley (1-1), Damian Moran (0-2), Shane Conroy (0-1), Jonathan Duffy (0-3), Brian Conroy (0-1), Brian Reilly and Ollie Vaughan (1-0), Subs used Alan Croghan, Declan Shanley

Ladies League
The Ladies team got their league campaign underway on Sunday morning last when they faced Annaduff in Dromod. Playing with a strong wind in the first half, the Annaduff girls ran up a sizeable lead and while the Bor ladies never gave up throughout the second half, it was the visitors who enjoyed a comfortable victory.
The Bornacoola team was: Michelle Reilly, Sara Duffy, Cora Mc Cauley, Niamh Reynolds, Jillian Duignan, Meave Duffy, Leonie Duffy, Charlotte Faughnan, Michelle Beirne, Kelly Howard, Alison Mc Keon, Fiona Reilly and Susan Shanley. Subs used were Rachel Duignan, Jessica Mc Keon and Ellen Duignan.

Minor League
The Minors played a very strong Leitrim Gaels in Leitrim village on Saturday last. The home side enjoyed a comfortable victory but the young Bors will no doubt have better days ahead.

News 16 - 03 - 09

U16 League
The U-16 team got their season underway on Saturday morning last when they played Dromahair in Dromod. A terrific first half from the young Bors left them a point up at half time having played against the wind. However, they couldn’t sustain the effort in the second half and Dromahaire grinded out a two point victory – 1-8 to 1-6. Bornacoola scorers were Anthony Mulligan 1-2, Tony Shanley 0-1, Roy Keenan 0-1, Mark Muldowney 0-1 and Kevin Shanley 0-1.

Underage Training

News 09 - 03 - 09

Division 3

Our Junior A team got their season underway when they played Mohill on Saturday afternoon last in Dromod. Fielding a young team, Bornacoola burst into an early three point lead. However, playing with the wind, Mohill steadied for the remainder of the first half and were well worth their three point half time lead. When a Mohill goal left the town team six points clear mid way through the second half, it looked as if the Bors were dead and buried. However, a Brian Reilly goal and a fighting final quarter from Bornacoola almost produced a great result but Mohill held on for a 1-11 to 1-8 victory.

The Bornacoola team was: Feargal Mc Gill, John Shanley, Seamus Mallon, John Reynolds, Mervyn Howard, Damian Mc Guinness, John Mc Govern, Shane Conroy, Feargal Howard, Damian Moran, Bobby Shanley, Ollie Vaughan, Declan Shanley, Brian Conroy and Brian Reilly. Subs used Sean Ryan and MJ Winters.

U-14 League

The U-14 league got underway on Saturday morning but there was no joy for the young Bors as they fell to a seven point defeat when they played St Caillins in Dromod. However, there was much to enthuse about in the Bornacoola performance and a similar effort in the weeks to come will surely produce the desired results.

Scór Sinsir

As we mentioned last week, it is the 40th anniversary of Scór and the Bors had a huge representation at the county semi-finals held last weekend. A big night ahead now too for our Set Dancers, Figure Dancers, Question Time team and Recitation specialist Louise Staunton who have all qualified for the County final which takes place on Saturday week, March 21st in Ballinamore.

The Last Ever Adventure of Diggerman?

Not so long ago, we used to keep you up to date on “The Adventures of DiggerMan”, the ever popular Derek “Digger” Duignan from Cloonturk. Last Saturday, Derek married Renea Armstrong in Ballina, just south of Brisbane, Australia. A great servant to the GAA Club, a great character, a fine footballer and an all round decent person, Derek left Ireland for Australia in 2004 for a year out, but fell in love with the country and has been domiciled there ever since. The country itself wasn’t all he fell in love with as Australian beauty Renea entered his life and the couple announced their engagement last year.

While Digger’s mother Teresa, father Seamus and brothers Ronnie and Brendan headed Down Under to join in the celebrations (and link up with sister Orla who is also married in Australia) last week, literally hundreds of people from Bornacoola and further afield asked I ensure they extend their best wishes through the club notes to Derek and Renea. So on behalf of all your friends in Ireland I would like to wish you both the very best in married life together and we look forward to seeing you on your trips home to Ireland which we hope will be as regular as possible.

Incidentally, the name Digger was bestowed on our hero sometime in the late 90’s by his then housemate Mark Mc Closkey following a particularly uninspiring performance for the Leitrim hurlers. If you want to know the reason why, I’m sure Mark won’t hesitate in enlightening you!!

U-16 League

The U-16 team get their league campaign underway this Saturday when they play Dromahaire in Dromod at 12 noon.

Division 4

Following a fine league campaign last season which saw them earn promotion from Division 5, our third team get their season underway on Sunday next when they have an away game with Aughavas.

Shield Competition

The Shield competition starts this weekend. However, the Bors have a bye in the first round of a competition which sees us in Group 1 where our opponents in the coming weeks will be Ballinaglera, Sean O Heslins, Eslin and Dromahaire.

Birthday Greetings

We’d like to wish a very happy birthday to David O Connor, Dromod who celebrated his 21st on Sunday last and marked his birthday with a well taken point for Leitrim in their drawn game with Antrim in the National Football league.

Leitrim GAA Supporters Club

Tickets for the Leitrim GAA Supporters Club are currently available from Shay Reynolds, Shane Reynolds, Michael Mc Gowan, Tom Moran and Jackie Conboy at a cost of €40 each. First prize is €5,000

Sympathy

Our sympathy is extended to the Carrigallen GAA Club and the family of the late Barry Mc Intyre who passed away at the weekend. Barry was Secretary of Carrigallen at the time of his passing. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Congratulations

Our congratulations to Annaduff Club man Eugene Cox on his recent award from Connacht Council. Eugene is the quintessential GAA man and has been at the heart of the Annaduff GAA Club for many years. As a player, team manager and mentor, administrator, fundraiser and in every conceivable facet of club life Eugene has been at the heart of everything Annaduff has achieved in recent years and the award is timely recognition of his great work for the club.
